Final Cut Pro

This is Apple’s contribution to the video editing world. It is a professional program used by, you guessed it, Mac users. Final Cut Pro has gone from being an Apple novelty to an industry standard professional tool since the mid 1990s. Recently Apple overhauled this program and released Final Cut Pro X. This program is drastically different than Final Cut Pro 7 and dropped down the professional quality of the product. If you’re looking to invest in a new, professional level video editor, try to get your hands on a copy of Final Cut Pro 7. Final Cut Pro X may be the future of video editing, but it still has some kinks to figure out before it can join the ranks of the best video editing software.

Avid Media Composer

For years Avid was considered the industry standard for video editing. That was, until Final Cut Pro took a cut out of its market. This program has literally all the bells and whistles you could possibly want. It has been used to edit movies, documentaries, commercials….practically anything you can think of. Its major downfall over the past few years is that it became an elitist company. The price was so extravagant that small businesses and home users were unable to take advantage of this software. That has changed in the recent years, especially with the release of Apple’s Final Cut Pro X. Avid is trying to win back their customers by offering great deals for people switching from Final Cut to Media Composer. If you’ve been wanting to try out Avid, now is the time to buy!

Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe is a well-known and well respected company that consistantly puts out quality products. Their creative suite includes such popular titles as Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator and, of course, Premiere Pro. Though Premiere can, and is, used in some professional settings, it is not as well regarded in the industry as Final Cut and Avid. The great thing about this program is that it can be used with practically any file type and it works smoothly with the other members of the Adobe Creative Suite. Similar to Avid, Adobe Premiere is also trying to win back some customers that were taken away by Final Cut Pro. They are offering discounts for anyone that is willing to make the switch from Final Cut back to Premiere, so again, now is a great time to buy if you think this might be the software for you.

Sony Vegas Pro

Sony Vegas is not widely recognized as a professional industry tool, but those who use it, love it. Just try to Google a review and you’ll see that it takes a while to find a negative one from an actual user. Again, it’s main downfall is that it is not perceived as a professional tool and it can only be used on PCs. Also, unlike Final Cut and Premiere, Sony Vegas does not come with any type of creative suite. That means all of the audio editing, graphic capabilities and compression tools are going to be harbored within the program. In the end, if you’re looking to incorporate sophisticated graphics, you’re going to need to end up purchasing Adobe After Effects anyway.
