Recreating Star Trek’s transporter FX using Christmas lights

I’ve spent the last two decades insistent PBS would never top “Sesame Street” or “Reading Rainbow.” But I was very wrong.

The network that brought us both Cookie Monster and LeVar Burton, you see, has since upped the ante with an awesome special effects series, “Shanks FX.” Free to watch online, the show follows filmmaker Joe Schenkenberg (a.k.a “Joey Shanks”) as he recreates everyone’s favorite special effects using nothing but stop-motion video and everyday objects.

Seriously, it’s impressive stuff—in particular, the episode where he tackles the “Star Trek” teleportation effect using only a string of Christmas lights:

No word yet on home remedies for “Star Trek” transporter sound effects, but you can always look here in the meantime.
