Creativity on the Go: How Mobile is Changing the Creative Process
Creativity is as natural an instinct as eating and breathing—which is why the creative process so quickly evolves to mirror our everyday lifestyles. Rock legend Kurt Cobain once famously said, “When creativity flows, it flows. I find myself scribbling on little notepads, and pieces of loose paper, which results in a very small portion of my writings to ever show up in true form.”
These days, the closest notepads artists have at hand are their mobile devices. While these high res screens and imaginative apps lack the nostalgic romance of good old-fashioned pen and paper—or analog camera, for that matter—they make up for it in their adaptability and ease of access. Smartphones are everywhere, and in the words of renowned photographer Jay Maisel, “the best camera is the one you have with you.”
To get a better look at how mobile technology is changing the creative process, we surveyed more than 1,500 creators from our community. The data showed that about 30% of users rely on mobile for creative projects–with a significant majority editing and publishing at least once a week on their phones or tablets.

Meanwhile, photography and video editing were the dominant projects types that surveyed users worked on in mobile.
And while these trends might be characterized as belonging to the “Instagram generation,” the photo-based platform was not the most prominent end destination for these creative projects—in this instance, the social networking monolith that is Facebook still reigns supreme.
The world lives on mobile now—it’s where we shop, read, communicate, and more. So, we created a collection that reflects the Instagram generation, called Creator to Creator. It’s content made by artists, for artists. Watch the video for a peek at some of the clips and music from the collection:
